Frequently Asked Questions
How do I save money on moving costs?
- We offer a varied rate structure depending on when you are moving. Rates can be affected during "non-peak" times of the month. The middle of the month and winter months tend to be less expensive.
- Be prepared! Having everything packed well & appliances disconnected will speed things up. The less dismantling of furniture the better for saving money. Moving smaller items before your moving date can also save money.
- Have a garage sale or give items away you no longer need.
How much will my move cost?
- The cost of a move can be based on many factors. On hourly rate moves, things like long walks, stairs, elevators and how well your belongings are packed all play a vital part in determining cost. The best option is to contact the mover for a free no obligation estimate. However don't let price be your only deciding factor. The most important thing is getting your family and belonging moved safely into your new residence. Reputation and word of mouth should go a long way in choosing a company.
How much money can I save by moving myself?
- Many people think that moving themselves is less expensive then hiring a professional moving company. Renting a truck is less expensive but by the time the 'hidden' costs are taken into account you could actually be losing money! Questions that should be carefully examined are:
- What is your labour really worth? What if I get hurt and miss work?
- Do you know how to load a truck so that everything will fit with little or no damage?
- What is the cost of renting moving pads, dollies, fridge carts etc? Items that are vital for a successful move.
- What if your belongings don't fit in the rental truck?
- Do you have experience driving a truck? What if the truck is damaged?
- What if one of your friends or helpers gets hurt?
- What are the out of pocket expenses like food, drinks and fuel going to cost?
What items am I not allowed to take?
- It is against the law to transport items such as aerosol cans, ammunition, bleach, propane tanks, gas tanks, matches, fire extinguishers, oil based paints or any other combustible or flammable item. Empty oil cans, gas tanks from lawn mowers, boat mowers etc. If you have any questions on what can be transported call your Mover for a complete list.
How does the moving company keep track of the items I have in Storage?
- All reputable moving companies should do a detailed inventory of your belongings before they comes to storage. The moving company will label each item and box with a numbered inventory sticker and make a written list showing the condition of all items coming into storage. Each set of stickers has a variety of colours and its own unique lot number. All items are loaded into private pallets and are sealed shut for the duration of the time your belonging are in storage. Any moving company that does not use this system should not be trusted to store your precious belongings.
What is a third party service and why do I need it?
- Many refrigerators, washers, dryers and other electrical or mechanical equipment require special servicing to assure safe transportation. Gas or Propane appliances need to be disconnected & serviced by your local utility company. Moving companies can set up these third party services for an additional charge.
What do many people forget to do when moving?
- Booking the elevator that needs to be used for an apartment move.
- Notify the post office, vehicle licensing office, etc. of your new address
- Get children's permanent school records
- Old Phone numbers - Take your old phone books to avoid directory assistance charges
- In the flurry of moving you may forget to give your new address to businesses, colleagues and friends. A good idea is to print off cards with your new address to give to old friends and acquaintances.
- Make sure that cleaning supplies are left along with the vacuum for a final 'once over' before closing the door for good.
- The garage door opener, spare house keys & manuals for built in appliances or equipment should be set aside for the new owners or tenants.
- In most cases plants & animals cannot be transported. Make separate arrangements for their transfer
- Items not at your household such as items lent to neighbours or items in a safety deposit box.
- Organize the safe transportation of all flammable & extremely valuable items.
Is my Move tax deductible?
- This depends on how far you are moving and why. In most cases if you are moving over 40km to start a new job or go back to school the moving costs should be tax deductible. Visit the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency website for more information www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca
